Audubon July 6 Raised Bed Gardening Workshop Free Thanks to Cummins

Jamestown, NY – Audubon Community Nature Center (ACNC) has added raised beds to its kitchen garden and will be offering three free gardening workshops, all thanks to a grant from Jamestown Cummins Engine Plant

Reg Boutwell, an avid gardener with years of experience, designed and built the raised beds. He is also instructing the 6-7 p.m. Raised Bed Gardening workshop on Thursday, July 6. Rain date is the same time on July 13.

Raised beds require some thought when it comes to design, and filling the beds requires a bit of know-how to get the best results. They also have some advantages over in-ground gardens.

Last year Audubon volunteers completely renovated the kitchen garden with the goals of showing gardening techniques suitable to our community, providing fresh, healthy food, and teaching self-sufficiency. Food from the garden provides ingredients for dishes served at several ACNC events, and children on field trips or attending Day Camp are invited to taste fresh produce. Visitors are invited to harvest food, and extra food is taken to St. Susan’s Center.

Cummins’ support of the raised beds has made possible creating space for those in wheelchairs and those with mobile disabilities to access the garden and effectively learn in a hands-on manner.

While reservations for the workshop are appreciated, walk-ins are welcome. To register, call (716) 569-2345 during business hours or register online through the Programs and Events page at auduboncnc.org. You can also check there for upcoming dates for the remaining workshops funded by Cummins Engine Plant.

Audubon’s Kitchen Garden is part of the 2017 Secret Gardens Tour on Saturday, July 1. Details are at auduboncnc.org/gardenstour.

Audubon Community Nature Center is located at 1600 Riverside Road, one-quarter mile east of Route 62 between Jamestown, New York, and Warren, Pennsylvania. To learn more, call (716) 569-2345 or visit auduboncnc.org.

Audubon Community Nature Center builds and nurtures connections between people and nature by providing positive outdoor experiences, opportunities to learn about and understand the natural world, and knowledge to act in environmentally responsible ways.
