Jamestown Audubon Announces Nature Photo Contest Winners

Jamestown, NY – Like last year, entries as well as winners in the Jamestown (New York) Audubon Nature Center’s 2015 Nature Photography Contest came from across the country and around the world.

The categories for submissions of photographs were Landscapes, Plants (including trees, fungi, lichens, mosses, etc.), and Wildlife (animals in their natural habitats), with Adult and Youth (18 and under or still in high school) Divisions in each category.

Jamestown, NY – On Saturday, July 25, you are invited to enjoy exceptional natural beauty while helping to restore and preserve an incredible wetland habitat.

The Audubon Nature Center’s Wild 5K Run/Walk is open to runners and walkers of all ages.  Proceeds from the race support protecting the Nature Center’s over 600 acres of unique habitat that not only decreases flooding in the surrounding communities but also purifies drinking water and provides sanctuary to plants and animals of all shapes and sizes.

Check-in and same-day registration is 8-8:45 a.m., with the race beginning at 9 a.m.

Special free children’s events take place during the race.

Volunteers Needed for Nature Center’s July 25 Wild 5K Run/Walk

Jamestown, NY – With hundreds of runners and walkers converging for the Wild 5K Run/Walk, the Audubon Nature Center needs dozens of volunteers on Saturday, July 25, 2015.

The 8-8:45 a.m. registration and 9 a.m. start time mean volunteers will be required as early as 7:30 a.m. to help with parking through to after-race clean-up in the early afternoon.

Folks will be needed to staff the water station and serve as trail cheerleaders/direction pointers from before the start to the end of the race. Other assignments include staffing the registration, refreshment and award tables, and helping at the finish line.

June 30 is Nature Center Photo Contest Deadline

Jamestown, NY – The deadline is drawing near for submitting photographs to the Jamestown Audubon Nature Center’s 2015 Nature Photography Contest.

But as Program Director Jennifer Schlick pointed out, “Whether you choose photographs from your collection or decide to shoot new ones, there is still time to submit entries by the June 30 deadline.” 

Schlick said that the Nature Photography Contest, now in its seventh year, helps fulfill Audubon’s mission of connecting people with nature, since a beautiful nature photograph truly inspires appreciation for the natural world.

Photographers with any level of experience are encouraged to submit their favorite images. Entry is simple, as all submissions are made online. Deadline for entry is Tuesday, June 30, 2015.

United Arts Appeal 2015 Grant Winners Announced

Jamestown, NY – Artistic projects of seven Chautauqua County non-profit organizations and four local artists are receiving grants from the United Arts Appeal of Chautauqua County’s 2015 Projects Pool Grants Program.

In announcing this year’s recipients, UAA President Lynn Warner said, “The arts are so important to both the quality of life and the economic well-being of our community. The United Arts Appeal is pleased to support these individual artists and organizations whose quality projects benefit the cultural life of Chautauqua County.”

Join the Nature Center’s May 16-17 Birdathon

Jamestown, NY – The Audubon Nature Center invites you to participate in Birdathon II, their second birdathon of the season, on Saturday and Sunday, May 16-17.

The Nature Center welcomes bird lovers of every level and at any location to keep a list of the birds they see during the weekend and report the species to the Center. Audubon will tally the total number of species seen and ask for donations for the effort, either per species or a total amount.

If you want to join others who will be enjoying the birds, come to the Bird Banding from 7-11 a.m. on May 16 at the Nature Center.  You can observe birds up close and also watch them in the trees. Local bird experts will help you locate them, identify them and enjoy their springs songs.

Nature Center Seeking Wild 5K Run/Walk Sponsors and Volunteers

Jamestown, NY – On Saturday, July 25, 2015, runners and walkers of all ages will again participate in the Audubon Nature Center’s annual Wild 5K Run/Walk. The 2015 event will raise money to support the on-going efforts to protect the Nature Center’s more than 600 acres of unique habitat.

The Nature Center is seeking community support to guarantee the event’s success.

Businesses and individuals can become Wild 5K sponsors by making financial or in-kind contributions or donating gift certificates. Sponsors will be recognized in a variety of ways, from listings in the program and on the website to receiving complimentary tickets to a Nature Center event of their choosing.
