AT&T Western New York Civic App Challenge

The challenge - Solve Local!

Technology giant AT&T along with University at Buffalo, State University of New York at Fredonia, Z80 Labs, InfoTech Niagara, Launch NY, United Way of Buffalo &Erie County and Hack Upstate today announced the AT&T Western New York Civic App Challenge—a two-month “virtual hackathon” in which developers are encouraged to “Solve Local” by building smartphone apps that serve Western New Yorkers. Winners will receive cash prizes totaling $18,000.

The challenge, facilitated by Hack Upstate, was launched at d!g Buffalo (pronounced ‘dig’) on September 10, the newly opened co-work space on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus and will run until November 10. 2014 Audubon Nature Photo Contest Winners on Exhibit

Jamestown, NY – The winners of Jamestown Audubon’s 2014 Nature Photography Contest will be on display at the Audubon Center & Sanctuary beginning this Saturday, August 30, at the Monarch Butterfly Festival.

Audubon Program Director and contest coordinator Jennifer Schlick noted, “We are excited that our winning photographs are ready to exhibit, and it’s great that visitors to this year’s Butterfly Festival will be the first to enjoy them!”

Schlick noted that both the Photo Contest and the Monarch Festival with its many butterfly-related opportunities and events – plus great food and fun – fulfill Jamestown Audubon’s mission to connect people with nature.

Jamestown, NY –Top winners in the Jamestown (New York) Audubon’s 2014 Nature Photography Contest came from as near as a few miles from the Audubon Center & Sanctuary to as far away as the other side of the globe.

“In the six-year history of the Photo Contest, we’ve had a number of international entries,” said Audubon Program Director and contest coordinator Jennifer Schlick, “but this is the first time we’ve had international winners. It’s really quite exciting!”

Schlick added that part of the purpose of the contest is to fulfill Jamestown Audubon’s mission to connect people with nature. “We hope to inspire all those who view these lovely images.”

The categories for submissions of photographs were Landscapes, Plants (including trees, fungi, lichens, mosses, etc.), and Wildlife (animals in their natural habitats), with Adult and Youth (18 and under or still in high school) Divisions in each category.

Audubon Photo Contest Deadline is June 30

Jamestown, NY – “A beautiful nature photograph truly inspires our appreciation for the natural world,” says Jamestown Audubon’s program director, Jennifer Schlick.  

“Whether you choose photographs from your collection or decide to shoot new ones, there is still time to submit your entries to Jamestown Audubon’s 2014 Nature Photography Contest by the June 30 deadline.”

Schlick explained that this annual competition, now in its sixth year, helps fulfill Audubon’s mission by connecting the photographer with nature and inspiring the viewer of the images to connect with nature. She added that Jamestown Audubon has a long history of appreciating and supporting nature art.

Photographers with any level of experience are encouraged to submit their favorite images. Entry is simple, as all submissions are made on-line. Deadline for entry is Monday, June 30, 2014.

Audubon Seeking Wild 5K Run/Walk Sponsors and Volunteers

Jamestown, NY – Jamestown’s Audubon Center & Sanctuary is breathing new life into a popular event that has been given a rest for a few years.

On Saturday, July 26, 2014, runners and walkers of all ages will participate in the Wild 5K Run/Walk, a revamped version of the Run for Liberty trail race, held annually from 2003 to 2009.

In describing the plans, Audubon Seasonal Naturalist and Wild 5K Co-chair Corinne Frederickson said, “Our goal is to provide an opportunity to enjoy the distinctive beauty of our Sanctuary while posing a meaningful challenge. Proceeds from the race this year support Liberty, our non-releasable resident Bald Eagle.” She explained that even with an incredible team of dedicated volunteers, Liberty’s care costs approximately $7,500 per year.

Get Your Cameras Out for Jamestown Audubon’s Nature Photo Contest

Jamestown, NY – Now that spring is here, it’s time to get out your camera to see if you can take a picture that wins a prize in the 2014 Jamestown Audubon Nature Photography Contest.

The contest, presented by the Audubon Center & Sanctuary of Jamestown, New York, awards prizes in three categories and two divisions. The Youth Division is for ages 8-18 or still in high school; Adult is 18 and over or post-high school. Youth and Adult winners in the categories of Landscapes, Plants, and Wildlife each receive a $100 cash prize.

With entries being submitted on-line, the competition has attracted international attention, receiving submissions from around the world.
