JAMESTOWN – Prendergast Library will promote awareness of eReaders and ebooks during two holiday open houses from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, and 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8.

“If you’re thinking of giving an eReader this year, or hoping to get one, this would be a great chance to explore the new technology,” said Director Linda Mielke.

During the events, eight devices for eReading will be on display: iPad 2, iPod Touch 4th Generation, Kindle Fire, Kindle Keyboard (3G & wifi), Kindle Touch (wifi), NOOK Color, NOOK Simple Touch, and SONY Reader Touch Edition (PRS-650).

Anyone who attends either open house or visits the library between Monday, Dec. 5, and Friday, Dec. 16, may also purchase tickets for a chance to win one of two Kindle eReaders. The devices were donated by Friends of Prendergast Library and will be given away before the holidays. Friends will also greet visitors and serve refreshments at the open houses.

The eReaders on display were provided by the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Library System via Federal Library Services and Technology Act funds, awarded to the New York State Library by the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services. As part of a local project called Online Trainer-in-a-Box, brochures have been created to help people learn about them and compare their features.

Staff members will familiarize those attending with each model and take sign-ups for more detailed one-on-one training sessions for individuals.

Library visitors can also find out about the growing collection of ebooks available to cardholders of automated libraries in the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Library System. The library system’s ebooks are available online at http://ccls.lib.overdrive.com/.

“The popularity of ebooks is exploding, and we want to encourage even more people to give them a try,” said Megan Disbro, software training and Web specialist librarian for the library system.

Prendergast Library is located at 509 Cherry St., Jamestown. For more information, call 484-7135, Ext. 225.
