JAMESTOWN – Space is still available in three computer classes set to begin in March at Prendergast Library.

Classes with room for more students are:

Introduction to Word Processing using MS Word – Part 1, a three-part course scheduled for 2 to 5 p.m. March 22, March 29 and April 5;

Introduction to Windows from 2 to 5 p.m. March 1 and March 8; and

Introduction to Spreadsheets Using MS Excel – Part 1 to be held on the four Fridays in March from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.

All of these classes will be taught in the library’s new Public Computer Center (PCC) by Janet Haveron, an instructor from Jamestown Community College. Helping people become “friends with a computer” is her mission.

“I have watched people of all ages and computer levels walk through the door and have ‘a light bulb moment’ of learning something new,” she said.

In her current class, students are receiving instruction on the Word 2010 Interface, creating and using autocorrect entries, spell and grammar check, thesaurus, and find and replace features. Also covered are page breaks, margins, line spacing, tabs, copy and paste, and mail merge.

“It’s exciting to see people in the community who have never been on a computer or are afraid of the computer come back class after class and become very comfortable with computers and software,” Ms. Haveron said.

Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES is also partnering with Prendergast Library to provide instruction. Free hands-on training by both organizations is offered in morning, afternoon and evening sessions. In written evaluations, several students completing courses in Word and Excel have praised learning to use shortcuts that made them more productive at work.

One-on-one instruction by members of the Prendergast Library staff is also available on using eBooks and audiobooks, resume writing and creating a Facebook page.

Prendergast Library is located at 509 Cherry St., Jamestown. Its PCC was created through a project called Broadbandexpress@yourlibrary funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Broadband Technology Opportunities Program.

According to Assistant Director Tina Scott, the PCC is catching on and demand is increasing for its services. She expects a new class schedule to be available March 1 at www.prendergastlibrary.org.
