Prendergast Library Sets Tutor Training Workshops

JAMESTOWN – The Prendergast Library Literacy Center will offer training for literacy volunteers the week of Feb. 22 in four three-hour sessions.

            Classes are slated for 5 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22; Thursday, Feb. 24; and Friday, Feb. 25; and 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26. 

            Classes will be held in the Literacy Center workroom on the first floor. Participants are asked to bring a bag lunch. Beverages will be provided.

            The Literacy Center offers instruction in reading, writing, math, and English as a second language to adult learners.

Health Department Announces New After School Hours for Teens

MAYVILLE, NY – The Chautauqua County Health Department is excited to announce new after school hours for teens at its Jamestown and Dunkirk locations beginning next month.

The Jamestown and Dunkirk locations will now hold Teen Clinics two nights a month from 3 to 6PM.

“The Health Department is committed to preventing teen pregnancy and limiting sexually transmitted diseases,” said Christine Schuyler, Chautauqua County Public Health Director. “We recognized the importance of making clinic hours more accessible to young adults to accommodate students' schedules.  We’re very pleased to now serve students who otherwise were unable to make appointments without missing class."

The Health Department clinics offer a broad range of quality reproductive services to both males and females.

Chautauqua Regional Youth Symphony Announces New Managers, Concert Plans

Jamestown, NY – The Chautauqua Regional Youth Symphony (CRYS) recently appointed Melissa Ferraloro to manage the Youth Symphony and Megan Shay, the Young Artists Orchestra. 

“As our students prepare for their Winter Concert, it’s great to have our new managers on board,” said CRYS board President Tanya Anderson. 

The Young Artists Orchestra and the Youth Symphony members are hard at work rehearsing for the Winter Concert on Sunday, February 13, in Jamestown Community College’s Scharmann Theatre. 

Maestro Bryan Eckenrode, CRYS music director and conductor, will conduct the 4 pm performance. 

Each year, up to 100 students are enrolled in CRYS’s three orchestras: Prelude Strings for beginning string musicians, Young Artists Orchestra for intermediate string musicians, and the Youth Symphony for highly talented and motivated musicians ages 12 through 20.

JAMESTOWN, NY – “Get your cameras ready,” encourages Jennifer Schlick, Program Director of the Audubon Center and Sanctuary. “You just might take a prize-winning photograph at the Talking Phone Book Snowflake Festival!” 

Schlick points out that with “Animals! Animals! Animals!” the theme of Jamestown Audubon’s 2011 Art in the Woods Nature Photography Contest, the Talking Phone Book Snowflake Festival on Saturday, February 5, will be a great opportunity for contest entrants. 

The three Divisions for this year’s Photo Contest are Beginners (ages 8-12), Youth (ages 13-18 or still in high school), and Adult (post-high school).

Jamestown, NY – At the Audubon Center and Sanctuary’s First Friday Lunch Bunch at 11 a.m. on February 4, Chautauqua Lake Management Commission member and long-time Jamestown Community College professor Dr. Tom Erlandson will discuss the Chautauqua Lake watershed. 

Erlandson looks forward to sharing the work of the Chautauqua Lake Management Commission, noting that, “For those interested in the environmental and economic health of Chautauqua Lake and its watershed, it is important to remember that ‘We are all in this together.’"

The Stateline Draft Horse Club offers Sleigh Rides every Sat. and Sun. in January and February from 1pm - 3pm.  The ride starts at the Bookstore and lasts about 45 min.  Price is $4 for adults and $2 for children.

Real Men Wear Pink!

The Jamestown Jets will take the fight to the ice at the Jamestown Savings Bank Arena this Friday. The 'fight against breast cancer' that is.

The Jets will kick off their "Pink the Rink" campaign and wear their pink uniforms in support of breast cancer awareness as they take on the Bradford Rattlers at 7:35 PM on Friday. There will be a Pregame Pink the Rink Reception in the lobby of the Arena starting at 6 PM. This will include music and entertainment provided by Media One Group, LLC and DJ ACE, wine tasting by Willow Creek Winery along with fundraising, raffles and auctions. 

The Pink the Rink Campaign will continue through the rest of the Jets regular season home schedule which includes Saturday night's game against the Deseronto Storm at 7:35 PM. The Jets will then return home after three weeks to take on the Toronto Moose on Friday, February 11 and wrap up the regular season against the Oro 77's on the 12th with Fan Appreciation Night.
