Learn Botanical Drawing and Painting in Three Sessions at Audubon

Learn Botanical Drawing and Painting in Three Sessions at Audubon

Jamestown, NY – Audubon Community Nature Center is offering a unique opportunity to learn “The Art of Botanical Drawing and Painting.”

In three Saturday morning sessions presented by two artists on staff, you can learn the basics of nature drawing and painting from observation.

Ruby Miller and Kim Turner will tag team instruction from 9 a.m. to noon on October 7, 14, and 21, 2017. Deadline for registration is Monday, September 25.

Artists and naturalists alike can benefit from this workshop. Beginners and seasoned artists are invited to hone their observation skills while developing drawing and watercolor techniques.

The sessions will progress each week, culminating with a finished watercolor painting of a botanical study. The methods used throughout the workshop are inspired by Agathe Ravet-Haevermans’s book, The Art of Botanical Drawing: An Introductory Guide.

Lessons at WILD All-Star Cheerleading Go Far Beyond the Mat

Lessons at WILD All-Star Cheerleading Go Far Beyond the Mat

While some families register their children for classes at WILD All-Star Cheerleading in Orchard Park to learn the latest cheerleading, gymnastic and dance techniques, it’s the underlying lessons in self-confidence, teamwork, personal responsibility, respect, discipline, social responsibility and family that are providing skills that will last a lifetime.

“While we do our best to offer opportunities to meet the needs of every student that comes through our door, we also get to know each individual and help them set and reach goals, learn the value of commitment and teamwork, and ultimately see their dreams become a reality,” said Rebekah Stiller, WILD co-owner and co-founder. “Our ultimate goal is to create champions both on and off the mat!”

Take a Happy Hour Hike into Autumn at Audubon

Take a Happy Hour Hike into Autumn at Audubon

Jamestown, NY – You are invited to welcome autumn with a hike on the splendid grounds at the Audubon Community Nature Center.

Audubon will provide the landscape and Senior Naturalist Sarah Hatfield will lead you through the woodlands on the first day of autumn, Friday, September 22, 2017.

At this 3-4 p.m. Happy Hour Hike, you can explore Audubon’s trails to see autumn color the world.

There is a flurry of activity in the natural world as everything gets ready for the lean season. Animals are packing away food, as are some plants, while others are sending their offspring out into the world as their final gesture.

Meet new people, learn a little bit, and enjoy the season. After the hike, bring a bit of cash to enjoy a (completely optional) follow-up beverage at a local restaurant with your fellow nature-nerds.

Remember to wear shoes that are suited to the trails. The walk will happen rain or shine, so come dressed for the weather.

Audubon Celebrating 60 Years at Annual Dinner on Monday, September 25

Audubon Celebrating 60 Years at Annual Dinner on Monday, September 25

Jamestown, NY – Audubon Community Nature Center has a tradition of recognizing volunteers and holding its annual meeting in late September.

This year’s event on Monday, September 25, is an unusually special occasion. In addition to Volunteer Appreciation Night, it is also a celebration of Audubon 60th anniversary.

“Sixty years ago a committed core of volunteers had the vision to create what has become Audubon Community Nature Center,” said Audubon President Ruth Lundin. “It is most appropriate that this milestone celebration highlights the many volunteers who continue to make it possible for us to connect people with the natural world!”

During Audubon’s 2016-2017 fiscal year, 311 volunteers logged more than 12,350 hours to support Audubon’s mission throughout all aspects of the organization. Lundin noted that volunteers contribute to every department – administration, buildings and grounds, education, research, conservation, and more.
