Audubon Nature Play Day – Mud Mania is Saturday, June 17

Audubon Nature Play Day – Mud Mania is Saturday, June 17

Jamestown, NY – Did you know that outdoor play for children: (1) supports creativity and problem-solving, (2) enhances cognitive abilities, (3) improves academic performance, (4) reduces attention deficit disorder, (5) reduces stress – and that’s not the full list.

“Mud Mania” is the subject of Audubon Community Nature Center’s final in a series of three Nature Play Days planned to inspire both kids and adults to make discoveries and feel more comfortable about the natural world through play.

Children ages three to eight and their favorite adults can drop in anytime from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 17, at Audubon’s Nature Play Area. Extra materials such as mud pie kitchen equipment, natural brushes, and water will be placed in the play area around the topic of playing with mud.

While children explore unstructured outdoor play in a safe environment, adults learn how to extend the play at home with handouts and a take-home item.

York State Senators Chris Jacobs and Michael Ranzenhofer, AAA Western and Central New York, New York State Police and AT&T teamed up to raise awareness for AAA’s 100 Deadliest Days (the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day when teen crash fatalities historically climb 15 percent compared to the rest of the year), as well as AT&T’s “It Can Wait” public education campaign and NYS distracted driving laws.

Distracted Driving Awareness Day in Western New York was hosted June 1 at AAA WCNY headquarters, where young drivers, parents and all those who visited the Amherst AAA were educated about the dangers of distracted driving.

Build a Bird Feeder at Audubon on Father’s Day

Build a Bird Feeder at Audubon on Father’s Day

Jamestown, NY – After last year’s successful event, Audubon Community Nature Center is again offering a special experience on Father’s Day, June 18, 2017.

That Sunday afternoon you can build a birdfeeder in Audubon’s woodshop. The program is open to all, but this is a great opportunity for dads and granddads to be together with their family.

Feeding and watching birds is an activity that different generations can all enjoy. Any time between 2 and 4 p.m. you can join naturalists and volunteers in the workshop to build a birdfeeder that you can take home to attract birds to your yard.

Designed and prepared by Audubon volunteers, the parts will be cut out and ready to assemble with nails and a hammer. Materials, tools, and instructions will be given, and adults are expected to help younger children.

Then stop by the Window on Wildlife in the Nature Center to watch the birds at Audubon’s feeders.

The cost is $10 per birdfeeder.
