Multiple Audubon Opportunities This Saturday

Multiple Audubon Opportunities This Saturday

Jamestown, NY – If you’re wondering what to do this Saturday (May 18, 2013) in celebration of spring, you need look no further than the possibilities being offered by the Audubon Center & Sanctuary.

Between 7:00 and 11:00 a.m. you can watch birds being captured, banded, and released. This is your last opportunity this spring to accompany scientists on net checks and watch them weigh, measure, collect data, and photograph the birds.  If you are lucky, you will be selected to help release a bird!

You can stop by the Plant Exchange and Sale any time from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Bring some of your own potted plants to exchange or support Audubon by purchasing plants. A focus this year will be to provide information and displays on pollinator gardens and other eco-friendly gardens. Audubon has a pollinator display, and you won’t want to miss the new pollinator garden created by local Eagle Scout, Adam Carlson.

Tickets Going on Sale for Audubon’s Secret Gardens

Tickets Going on Sale for Audubon’s Secret Gardens

Jamestown, NY – Tickets go on sale on Memorial Day weekend (May 24) for the Audubon Center & Sanctuary’s Secret Gardens Tour on Saturday, June 29.

Visitors can expect to be inspired by gardens large and small, traditional and non-traditional. For this tenth annual event, there will be two gardens featured in Lakewood, two in the town of Busti, and one in the city of Jamestown. The gardens are all handicapped accessible.

Tour organizer Merle Szydlo noted that each garden is distinct. “One is as small as a roof – actually, it IS a roof – and the owners of this unique and environmentally-friendly home will be on site to answer your questions.” She added, “Another is measured in acres, with abundant wildlife habitats. There will be something of interest to everyone!”

Rain or shine, tour hours are 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Plant Exchange Time at Audubon

Plant Exchange Time at Audubon

Jamestown, NY – What began as a mini-event to find homes for some of the Audubon Center & Sanctuary’s leftover herb garden plants has become a full-fledged event.

On Saturday, May 18, Audubon’s annual Plant Exchange and Sale provides an opportunity to meet other gardeners, to exchange extra and no-longer-needed plants from your home for others that suit you better, and to support Audubon.

It is pretty simple: from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. just come with plants in pots (no plastic bags) or money, and exchange or buy plants and take them home.

Bring in your extras, your volunteers, and seedlings or plants you don’t have room for. Labels including the name of the plant, color (if known), and sun/shade preference are appreciated. Audubon reserves the right to refuse invasive, ill-looking unspotted or other plants.

Audubon Birdseed Order Time

Audubon Birdseed Order Time

Jamestown, NY –  Friday, January 11, 2013, is the last day to place a mail order for bird seed from the Audubon Center and Sanctuary and Sunday, January 13 is the online deadline.

Wild birds can have a difficult time finding food this time of year. Putting out a feeder and keeping it filled brightens their lives as well as their feeder’s: watching these beautiful creatures from the comfort of our homes can bring optimism to our days and introduce young people to the natural world.

Audubon offers a variety of seed choices, with the most popular being its exclusively formulated Conewango Blend. Specialty seeds, cakes, and peanut butter bells are also available.

The Audubon Center and Sanctuary works to find the best birdseed mixes at affordable prices, and all proceeds benefit its programs, exhibits, buildings and grounds.
