Catholic Charities Launches 2016 Appeal at New West Side Health Care Center; Sets $11 Million Goal

Catholic Charities of Buffalo officials and volunteer leaders announced an $11 million goal for the 2016 Appeal Jan. 6. Monsignor David S. Slubecky, Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia for the Diocese of Buffalo, representing The Most Reverend Richard J. Malone, Bishop of Buffalo who was unable to attend, made the announcement at a kick-off event held at the new Catholic Charities Health Care Center for refugee clients and the community, located in the former Nativity Roman Catholic Church on Buffalo’s West Side. The theme for the 2016 Appeal is “Find Good Within” and the patron saint of the 92nd annual Appeal is St. Nicholas.

The Appeal helps fund Catholic Charities’ 70 programs across 61 sites in the eight counties of Western New York along with Bishop’s Fund for the Faith.

Seriously Ill Student Receives Nursing Degree

AMHERST, N.Y. -- Daemen College President Gary A. Olson conferred a bachelor’s degree in nursing to student Paula Williams, who is seriously ill with breast cancer, at a private on-campus ceremony held Dec. 16 in the Wick Campus Center Alumni Lounge. She completed the academic requirements in the fall semester to receive her nursing degree, which was presented in advance of the college’s annual commencement ceremony in May.

“We are all very proud of Paula for persevering through her illness to receive her degree,” said Olson. “She is courageous, tenacious, and an inspiration to everyone at Daemen.”

A graduate of the former Buffalo General Hospital School of Nursing, Williams held various staff and leadership positions at Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo. In recognition of her professional excellence, she was awarded a scholarship from the Kaleida Health Foundation.

Women Create Announces Directors’ Assistant, Extends Deadline

Women Create Announces Directors’ Assistant, Extends Deadline

Jamestown, NY – The creative directors of Women Create have announced the addition of a directors’ assistant to present their third biennial juried exhibit of women’s art next spring. They are also extending the application deadline to January 31, 2016.

Ashville, New York, resident and mixed media artist Katherine Turnquist is joining internationally exhibited artist, curator and educator Debra Eck and photographer and blogger Jennifer Schlick to make this presentation in downtown Jamestown, New York.

Women of all ages are invited to submit work in any visual art medium for consideration. Artists from Western New York, Northwestern Pennsylvania, and Northeastern Ohio are especially encouraged to apply. Artists will be notified of the juror’s decisions during the week of March 1, 2016.

New Book Features the Best of Newspaper Columnist Phil Ranallo; Two Signings Planned

Paul Ranallo, son of the late newspaper columnist Phil Ranallo, will hold two book-signing events Dec. 4 and 5 during the annual Hertel Holidays. Ranallo’s very first signing will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, at The Pasta Peddler/Blackbird Sweets, 1547 Hertel Ave., Buffalo. The second signing is scheduled for 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at North Park Theatre, 1428 Hertel Ave.

Ranallo’s book, “What’s New, Harry? The Best of Buffalo Courier-Express Columnist Phil Ranallo,” features more than 100 of Phil Ranallo’s greatest columns originally written during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. The columns cover a variety of public figures — from Ralph Wilson, Tim Horton and Jack Kemp to Muhammad Ali, Jesse Owens and Martin Luther King — in addition to historic moments in American history. Each story, according to the author, is like opening a long-lost time capsule.

Jamestown, NY – Audrey Kay Dowling has been named the juror for the 2016 Women Create juried exhibit of regional women’s art.

 “We are thrilled that Audrey has accepted our invitation to take on this major challenge,” said Jennifer Schlick. A photographer and blogger, Schlick and internationally exhibited artist, curator and educator Debra Eck are creative directors for Women Create. “Audrey brings a tremendously broad background to the task and will guarantee the quality of our presentations.”
