Audubon Nature Center Supports Fall Regional Bird Count

Audubon Nature Center Supports Fall Regional Bird Count

Jamestown, NY – The Audubon Nature Center supports the Buffalo Ornithological Society’s (BOS) ambitious effort every fall to count birds in Western New York.

Whether watching on their own property or committing to a larger area, it takes many people -- beginning to advanced birders -- to cover the four-county territory that is counted.

If you have experience in bird counting, you can be part of this important work by volunteering on Saturday October 8.  If you’re interested but inexperienced, you could observe others and learn for future counts.

The BOS count has been held every second Saturday in October since 1939.  The date was chosen to coincide with the end of the fall migration.

Just like people, birds need food, water, and shelter. They are fairly fussy and looking for a variety of things in any yard: not all food or shelter is created equal.

The 10 a.m. to noon class will go into the basics of feeding, identifying, and attracting birds.

You will learn some fantastic recipes for homemade feeds that the birds just adore. You will also learn a variety of ways to create shelter for and photo opportunities of birds out the window.

Learn Butterfly Gardening at Nature Center

Learn Butterfly Gardening at Nature Center

Jamestown, NY – Butterflies create a rainbow of color that complements any garden.

At the Audubon Nature Center’s Butterfly Gardening workshop you can learn how to plant flowers that attract them and create a perfect butterfly habitat.

During the 7-9 p.m. class on Thursday, July 23, 2015, instructor Jeff Tome will describe how a few simple plants and paying attention to basic butterfly needs can transform your yard into a butterfly paradise.

Butterflies need more than a couple of butterfly bushes to attract them. Many require certain plants to lay their eggs on. Many caterpillars only eat from one family of plants or even only one particular plant.
