Learn About Bird Behavior at Audubon’s First Friday

Learn About Bird Behavior at Audubon’s First Friday

Jamestown, NY – At the Audubon Center and Sanctuary’s First Friday Lunch Bunch at 11 a.m. on April 1, Ann Beebe will share interesting facts about bird behavior.

“Birds Do That? Why?” will be her theme, while she uses photos by Dave Cooney and Norman Karp as a backdrop to her presentation,

Beebe will explore questions like:

Why do new-born Horned and Pied-billed Grebes eat hundreds of their parents’ feathers?

Do Rusty and Red-winged Blackbirds huddle together in roosts just because of warmth? (Maybe not!)

Why do some Red-winged Blackbird females mate with a male who has other mates? Is it worth the risk that there will not be as much help in feeding the chicks?

A long-time Audubon member and bird enthusiast, Beebe has served on Audubon’s Operating Committee as chair of Gardens.

Following the 11 a.m.

Audubon Offers Great Backyard Bird Count Experience

Audubon Offers Great Backyard Bird Count Experience

Jamestown, NY – The Audubon Center and Sanctuary is offering a delightful way to participate in the February 18-21 Great Backyard Bird Count.

“We wanted to offer people a different opportunity this year,” said Audubon Program Director Jennifer Schlick. “Folks are welcome to count at home, or we’d be happy to have them come to the Center and celebrate with us on Saturday, February, 19, when it will be ‘All About Birds.’”

Audubon Birdseed Sale Time!

It’s not easy for wild birds to find food this time of year. Putting out a feeder and keeping it filled brightens their lives as well as their feeder’s: watching these beautiful creatures from the comfort of our homes can bring optimism to our days and introduce young people to the natural world.

Friday, January 14, 2011 is the last day to place an order for bird seed from the Audubon Center and Sanctuary.

There are a variety of seed choices, with the most popular being Audubon’s exclusively formulated Conewango Blend.  Specialty seeds, “cakes,” and peanut butter bells are also available.  All the choices are on the order form that can be obtained by calling the Audubon Center (716-569-2345) or clicking on the order form on the home page of Audubon’s web site at jamestownaudubon.org.
